Costantino Dardi

Costantino Dardi (Cervignano del Friuli, 28 November 1936 - Tivoli, 24 November 1991) occupies a crucial position in Italian architecture of the second half of the twentieth century. His training at IUAV in Venice, where he enrolled in 1955 and graduated in 1962 under Giuseppe Samonà, was tested from the outset in the demanding arena of competitions. In 1962 he won second prize for the Centro Direzionale of Turin; in 1963 he received second prize in the In Arch Domosic competition for a secondary school in the Veneto and, in the same year, joint second prize for the new Ospedale Civile di Venezia at San Giobbe. In 1968 he won the AGIP competition for the standard service station Kaaba, which led to the Mestre Bazzera service station built between 1969 and 1971 and later recognised as a benchmark in infrastructural architecture. In 1983 he led the team awarded joint first prize for the Standiana park in Ravenna. From 1974 he taught architectural composition at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Rome La Sapienza and designed the restoration and reorganisation of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, reopened in 1990. What makes Dardi indispensable, also in an international perspective, is his ability to shift the focus of architectural discourse: no longer the purely iconic object, but void, path, and the relationship with context and with the work of art. His so called elementary geometry, sustained by analytical rigour and a refined commitment to measure, turns exhibitions, schools, and infrastructures into dense, controlled spatial devices. From the primary school in Longarone (1964) to the installations for the 10th Quadriennale di Roma (1973), and on to the Strada Novissima at the Venice Biennale (1980), Dardi weaves landscape, architecture, and exhibition design into a unified matrix, in which form does not end in image but accumulates memory, experience, and meaning. In this conception of space as an authentic language lies the lasting relevance and exemplary quality of his work within the cultural landscape of architecture.
