Aldo Rossi

Aldo Rossi (Milan, 3 May 1931 to 4 September 1997). His education at the Politecnico di Milano, where he studied from 1949 and graduated in Architecture in 1959 under Piero Portaluppi, was shaped early on by an interplay of practice, criticism, and teaching. He worked with Ignazio Gardella and Marco Zanuso, wrote for Casabella-Continuità, Società, and Il contemporaneo, and later taught at the Politecnico and at ETH Zurich in the early 1970s. Rossi’s central importance in the artistic and architectural landscape lies in his ability to turn the discipline into a discourse on urban memory. With L’architettura della città (1966) and Autobiografia scientifica (1981), he overturned functionalism: the city is no longer an efficient machine, but the slow construction of types and primary forms, repositories of collective memory. Works such as the Monte Amiata residential complex at Gallaratese in Milan (1968 to 1973), the San Cataldo Cemetery in Modena (competition 1971; construction in the 1970s to 1980s), the Teatro del Mondo for the Venice Biennale (1979 to 1980), and the Il Palazzo Hotel in Fukuoka (1987 to 1989) reveal an austere language of elementary volumes that often privileges iconic force over comfort: architectures as signs rather than mere buildings. The first Italian to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1990, an Academician of San Luca since 1979, and recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Medal in Architecture in 1991, Rossi remains indispensable for understanding European Neo Rationalism and the tensions between theory, form, and everyday life in twentieth century cities.
